In honor of singing showtunes with roadnotes last night at Marie's Crisis, what books or other source texts would you like to see made into a musical? Especially fantasy or science fiction ones?
can't think right now (jsut got off overnight shift, should be in bed), but there is a German play version of Good Omens:) not sure if it's a musical, though. here's a link, but it's in German, so i don't know what it says, just the gist (that they're p-reforming Good Omens) http://www.theater-unikum.de/ein-gutes-omen-nach-terry-pratchett-und-neil-gaiman/
This might be a good place to mention that cadhla wrote a full length musical version of 1984. It was almost produced in 2001, and then after September, with the political climate change it was deemed unsuitable for production.
I also know about a musical production of Geoff Ryman's Was that I would love to see. It was done in Chicago, and some friends were involved, but I never got to see the video.
Speaking of friends involved in musical adaptations, have you seen what mannoftalent has been up to lately?
That would be cool too. Although I was not as in love with Metropolis as I wanted to be. The underdwellers, or whatever they were called, seemed too easily led into silly behavior to me. Unable to determine if this was for reasons of class condescension or just plot convenience, but either way, bleah.
I love Bordertown but it's so sprawling and open ended I think I'd rather see it as a TV series. The Prize in the Game would be good. I'd love to see Tooth and Claw, but lord knows how they'd do the dragons.
Well, if one is going to do Tigana, one should probably do A Song for Arbonne as well.
That said, in my experience, anything much longer than a novella (or at least the short end of novel) is changed signifigantly by being transformed into a musical because of how much ends up needing to be cut.
But Flowers for Algernon might be short enough.
The Thirteen Clocks by Thurber would be a lot of fun (In a very Once Upon a Matress kind of way.)
The Innkeeper's Song by Beagle might be interesting as well.
You're right about the cuts; I was just getting annoyed by Love is Everything kind of lyrics, and wanting to rebut with a stunning aria on "Love is what it is, but it is not enough."
Totally 13 Clocks! Or The White Deer!
I saw Flowers for Alegernon as a plain play and it was awesome.
I want to see the Lion's Blood musical. Half the songs are written already anyway. It could be done a la Les Miserables, and I think it would be fantastic.

Anything in the Bordertown shared world stories would make a great musical.

I may well think of others.
