They can't all be deep

Finally I can get broadband! Verizon to offer DSL for $14.95 a month. Which is about eight bucks less than I'm paying Earthlink for dialup. It's a pity, because Earthlink has been that rare joy, a provider so glitchless as to be almost unnoticed. But faster and affordable wins.

Also, d'oh. Oh noes, says Mer, I can't try to go to the Serenity press screening tonight because I'm having dinner with Mom. Who is a huge Firefly fan and is bringing my DVDs to dinner to give back. Yeah, it took me 12 hours to figure out the solution to this conflict. Because I am smart like rock.

...and sharp, like building. :)

Hee!

Yay on inexpensive broadband and meep on conflicting schedules.

I'm so excited though, that it's only about a month until we can see it PROPERLY.

Hee! Thanks.

Heh. S'okay, new plan is to skip out of work an hour early (with permission, I am an honest Mer), meet up with the MerMom, get on line, and pray.

Possibly while talking loudly about the breast cancer treatment that mom just had, because hey, it's true, and just because I have scruples doesn't mean I have shame. And if we don't get in, we'll have the dinner we were planning in the first place. :)

Yay, onemonthonemonthonemonth! I am planning *massive* outing, not opening night but the next evening, so the Shabbas-observant Jews can come too.

Yay broadband!

Good luck getting into the screening tonight.

Thanks! I did get in, which was cool. I wish I had the two version I've seen, so I could figure out what was an actual change and what was me noticing different things second time through.

We had no cast members or Joss -- if they talked to the press, they did it in some press conference which fans were not at. Which was sort of disappointing, but OTOH if I'm ever going to meet Joss, I'd kind of like to do it when I haven't got snot all over my face. And possibly without my mom, who I adore but keeps mispronouncing his name.

Mom liked it, though. We recruit!

Yay broadband!

Yay indeed. Now I just have to, you know, get it.

General yays and stuff!

Yippie!

I went with Earthlink's DSL in 03, and have never been happier.

I am in a bad position where I can't switch isp, as I never want to lose my email addresses...

[identity profile] stakebait.livejournal.com 2005-08-25 03:31 am (UTC)(link)
*nodsnods* all my email addies are web based for just that reason. The only people who ever send me mail at earthlink is earthlink. :)

You can get a pobox.com address now ($15/year) and start training people to sned to that address. It's a forwarding service, that will forward to multiple real addresses, if you want. Once everyone gets the idea, you can get a new address, repoint the pobox forawrding, and drop the old address.

Outgoing mil can be set up to be 'from' the pobox adddress (unless you're sending from a webmail host, like Yahoo), so when people reply, the replies go to pobox, and then get forwarded.

I've switched ISPs 3 times (including 2 cross-country moves) since I started using pobox, and it's all gone well.

Some organizations provide pobox-like services for free. I'g you're a member of a professional society, you might want to check that outbefore paying the $25.

From what I hear, the Verizon DSL may give you a small amt. of aggravation but mostly it works fine. It's worth it, anyway, at that price and for getting to move on from dialup (I can't remember what dialup was like now. I just. Can't. Imagine it anymore. *shudders* Which is silly, because at one time dialup was perfectly adequate, thank you...)

Cool, thanks for the info. And you get acclamated. I remember before I had a hard drive. At all.

That's why I never wanted to take up a promo offer. They're great if you're not sure you want it, but awful for "I'm sure I want it, but I can't afford it. For the love of god don't get me hooked." Same deal with single malt scotch.
