I seem to have accidentally discovered how to network.
Ran into friend C., from the New York Review of Science Fiction, on the street. Friend C. has written an article relating to eBay, sold it freelance, and is looking to do more. I know the PR people for eBay from my job. I make introduction.
I volunteer for Learning Leaders through my company. They ask for help finding more book donations. Friend L., from college, works for a children's book publisher. I make introduction again.
This is kinda cool. I always thought of networking as the process of deliberately seeking out people who might be useful to me, so it always seemed smarmy and manipulative. But introducing people I already know who can be useful to each other doesn't feel that way at all.
