Following Seanan (and Josh) like the proverbial sheep

My own crack at filking Cotton Mill Girls

She’s Donna Quixote

And I’m Sasha Pancho

And we battle the windmills every place that we go

Cause it’s hard times Windmill Girls, It’s hard times everywhere

It’s hard times, Windmill Girls,

Hard times, Windmill Girls

It’s hard times, Windmill Girls, hard times everywhere

They say it’s crazy

And they might be right

But this white trash lady’s

Gonna be a knight

Yeah it’s hard times Windmill Girls, It’s hard times everywhere

Chorus

The thing about windmills

Is they keep coming back around

And it’s hard to practice chivalry

In one horse towns

And it’s hard times Windmill Girls, It’s hard times everywhere

Chorus

We’re kinda short on villains

And we’re out of kings

But we’re up to our asses in recalcitrant things

So when you’re fighting your computer or your car or your phone

Call the Windmill Girls and you won’t mix it up alone!

Chorus

*giggle* Windmills! (And Don Quixote!)

Can give scansion suggestions if you wanna (can also not give scansion suggestions if you don't wanna -- although apropos of scansion I -love- the 'recalcitrant' line!).

Also, Seanan? Don't you mean Talis (or did Seanan write her own filk rather than "just" covering Talis's?)

I am up for scansion suggestions though I probably can't do anything about them till I get back from LA.

Do I mean Talis? I'll take your word for it; I'd only ever heard Seanan sing it, so I'd assumed it was hers, but you would know...

I do, having eventually looked it up -- "Cotton-Tail Girls" is a Talis Kimberley filk (although one that I first encountered via Lady Mondegreen).

Scansion comments in another comment so I can see the full post while I'm working on it.

Scansion ideas

[personal profile] mneme 2012-01-19 05:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Ok, first, the first verse--tricky, since the rhyme word is a stretch (due to stresses, natch). What about this?

She is Donna Quixote

(and) Sasha Pancho's my name

And our battle with windmills is our claim to fame,

2nd verse is totally on; no suggestions needed there.

3rd verse just wants tweaking, I think. How about this:

See, the thing about windmills

Is that they come back around

And it’s hard to be chivalric

In one horse towns

And it’s hard times Windmill Girls, It’s hard times everywhere

Same for the third verse/double verse: [suggested e-book as an idea for a lead-stressed two syllable thing to fight; couldn't think of a synonym for car with that structure that didn't feel forced]

We’re a bit short on villains

And we’re all out of kings

But we’re up to our asses in recalcitrant things

So when you’re fighting your computer or your e-book or your phone

Call the Windmill Girls and you won’t mix it up alone!

Chorus

Oh, love the "chilvalry/one horse town" wordplay; missed that the first time around!

Thanks!

"Hard to practice chivalry in one-horse towns" actually fits the original scansion just fine -- the original filk isn't entirely consistent in terms of number of syllables, and there are some rather crowded lines like "I wash it every evening in an excellent shampoo".

I was coming off the original - or some random person's best guess transcription of same -- but since I was only looking at lyrics, not hearing how the words were pronounced, I'm not surpried some of my scansion is off. Bat, if you could sing the original for me at some point, or point me to a recording, that would be nifty.
