Home from California.

You know what's fun? Returning to a sounding smoke detector. After the panic attack that your house is on fire and the futile attempt to try and sleep through it and call the super in the morning, there's the joy of tearing apart your apartment for a manual you've long since lost, adrenaline pumping as the damned thing goes off every 30 seconds; trying to quiet a whining (but alive) cat with the other hand while you figure out how to change a battery to one you haven't got without setting off a full fledged alarm at 1 am; perching barefoot on a ladder trying not to step on your dress and go arse over tits into the terra cotta tile that seemed like such a good idea when you installed it. All the while wondering if it's been doing that since you left, and your neighbors are going to kill you dead.

Oh, for a glamorous life in the big city.

On the other hand, I've rarely enjoyed the simple absence of sound quite so much.

California and [livejournal.com profile] cadhla and [livejournal.com profile] porpentine were all lovely, I saw penguins and otters and very small sharks, American Airlines went above and beyond the call of service (you have to fetch me a drink, you *don't* have to offer to block the seat next to me to make sure it stays empty and give me good advice on felting my knitting), and now I shall sleep.

Oh man, boo for spastic smoke detectors. [livejournal.com profile] oyceter and I had quite the experience one night with ours too...

And yay for California and funny animals and good airline service!

:)

*vicarious wince* I'm sorry. I feel your smoke detect-y pain. I am WAY tired this morning, and still cringing in expectation of checking my home voicemail and finding the death threats. Must to buy a battery on the way home, because if I don't, tonight will be the night we burn down, and man will I feel stupid. :)

Hey, whatever happened with your adventures in haircutland?

Thank you!

It was not as haircutty as I was expecting. I mean, you can see the layering if you're looking for it, especially in the front, but if you're not a) me or b) looking closely, it basically looks like a slightly fluffier version of the hair I had before. Which is definitely better than arrgh, my eyes, my eyes, but not quite the ideal.

I think I need to do more research in advance next time, and come with pictures. And perhaps inch up on a more style-y style, though as long as I want long and easy care, I'm kind of tying their hands. And the students are unnervingly blunt with their instructors, but it comes with a shoulder and scalp massage.

So all in all, for $18, it doesn't suck. Definitely a step up from Supercuts. Undoubtedly a step down from the kind of schnazzy salon that would do my research for me and design zee masterpiece of hair art, but I can only afford that if I give up paying the mortgage. And the last thing I want to do is go once and fall in love with a haircut I can't afford to maintain.
