an uneventful day

Found out the city has gyms for $75 per year -- beats the heck out of $79 per month with corporate discount. (which might allow me to pay for a trainer if the madness continues). Must go see, but sounds promising. No yacht, though.

House now half-way clean for Slag Heap-attending out of town visitors, by my not-very-rigorous standards. If they came now, they would probably not flee. Tonight, there shall be vacuuming. (Not so favorable review of the play in the NY Times today, BTW, but they had some nice things to say about Vinnie K.)

Just picked up a book by a new-to-me author at lunchtime -- John Brosnan's Mothership. Came back to desk, hit refresh, found out from officialgaiman that Brosnan has passed away. I do not like creepy coincidences, Sam I am.

Re: that discussion of LJ etiquette that is making the rounds -- I will try hard to remember and honor people's expressed preferences in their journals, but since it seems entirely reasonable to me to stop and disagree with strangers (politely) in any instance where it would be appropriate to stop and agree with strangers (politely) I may slip up sometimes.

As far as my own journal goes, I put topics out to be discussed. I expect and even enjoy some disagreement. If it is a public post, unless I say something to the contrary, I would prefer that you disagree with me right in the comments, where other people interested in the discussion can easily see it and chime in, than that you go back to your own journal to do so.

Unless it makes you more comfortable, or your thoughts have touched off an only-somewhat related essay, or you want to share it with your own friends list. Or, of course, your comments run long and you get tired of chunking them up to fit the #$%^! character limit.

Pushing the public/private/semi-private space metaphor, I regard this as like starting a conversation with passing neighbors from my front stoop. Yes, there are some perks and privileges I reserve because it's my house and not the town square, but at the same time, there are many I happily cede because I'm choosing to interact with the street and not my living room.

Which is not, really, a disagreement with the original poster -- I agree that we all set the rules for our own journals, and I share her sense of it being semi-public -- but since my idea of what's good manners for semi-public seems to be significantly different from hers, and the essay's being widely linked for its broader application to LJ manners in general and not just in her space, this seemed like a good moment for a clarification.

I usually don't mind, if I don't want to talk about something I just don't reply. I never reply to anonymous comments-I think I'm not alone in that.

It says in my profile that I don't want to get in arguments, but arguments aren't the same as debabtes.

*nods* Makes sense. I almost always reply to anonymous comments, but I've never had one that could've been a troll -- it's usually friends who don't have LJs, or some random person who found a story of mine on an archive somewhere.

There are a few topics that are too sensitive for me to take the full brunt of debate -- but I tend to post about those rarely, and either locked, or with disclaimers.

Actually, I won't be there -- I'll be at the other home, taking care of Mom of Mer. But I figured if I was going to be away for the weekend anyway, it only makes sense to let folks who're coming in from out of town crash at my place and keep kitty company.

You know I only just realized that VK will be doing an accent. I can't tell if I'm going to like it a la Alexis or if that's going to force me into a nasty case of church giggles. Only time will tell.

You totally know me. However I fortunately got the *first* inflatable mattress fixed -- the one that plugged in and inflated with no charging, but used to have the impossible to open valve? Turns out a new valve is like 10 bucks and you pop it in yourself, so whee! No more problem. And it only took me 3 years.

Go down to replacement parts and click on Air Release Valve. The new one doesn't look quite the same, at least mine didn't, but it works so who cares?

FWIW it was a little tough to get the old valve out, mostly my pictogram reading issues but also stiffness and it being tricky to get the right grip. Getting the new valve in was easy-peasy.

I think my metaphor was a group of friends meeting at a coffeeshop (LJ's programming being the shop itself). People sometimes stop by, strangers and acquaintances alike, when they hear an interesting snippet of conversation, and sometimes they're invited to pull up a chair; sometimes they're told "Bugger off."

A friend of mine who saw "Slag Heap" liked it and said it was thought-provoking. Doesn't sound like a cheerful night at the theater, but clearly there's one compensation.

City rec centers, yay. Was partial to the Carmine Street one... two blocks from work back then, not to mention the fact that a certain company accidentally paid out $100 on a $75 tab so you actually got paid $25 a year to exercise. And that is what you call a New York bargain... it ain't one unless they pay you to take it outta the store.
