Joyce estate plans to sue if Joyce is read aloud on Bloomsday. Ah, my kingdom for a suitably obscure and whimsical way to say "get stuffed." How I long for the days when copyright only lasted 14 years, plus another 14 if re-registered by a living author. Link from [livejournal.com profile] supergee.

Tennessee County wants to charge homosexuals with crimes against nature. This is the same county that produced the infamous Scopes Monkey Trial. They keep using that word, nature. I do not think it means what they think it means. (Thanks to [Bad username or site: mintwitch for the info, and <i @ livejournal.com]The Princess Bride for the mangled quote.)

::argggh:: Not again! (This is the same state that tried to decree pi = 3 ...)

You're joking about the pi thing, right?

God it's hard to tell these days.

According to The Straight Dope, it was Indiana. In 1897 Rep. T.I. Record introduced in the in the Indiana House of Representatives House Bill #246, which was apparently very incoherently written and suggested several rational (in the mathematical sense, not the every-day one) values for pi, including 3.2, 3.23, and 4, but not 3.0.

The bill was initially sent to the Committee on Swamp Lands, which passed it to the Committee on Education, which gave it a “pass” recommendation and sent it on to the full House, which approved it unanimously.

In the state Senate, the bill got looked at by a professor of mathematics who was visiting. The professor described the bill’s author as crazy, and the bill got no farther.

Huh. My mom used to throw Bloomsday parties. Threatening to sue in an effort to prevent a reading? That is so very silly.

Oh ikkk. What a bunch of backwards ijeets. I'm so glad I live in MA.

Your mom is cool. I've always meant to go to NY's Bloomsday celebration, but I've never actually made it. I did wander around Dublin with a bar of lemon soap from the Joyce museum in my pocket, though. :)

Thing that really sickens me is, all those monogamous humans. Not natural.

Oh, what a bunch of wazzocks.

Hee! And I love you for using the word wazzock. Just saying. :)

Ah, the extension of the term of protection to 70 years - great way to ensure nothing falls intot the public domain for another 20 years. Stupdiest decision ever, imho, although I guess it does beat the protection wanted by Sony Bono. But beyond that, this is one of the reasons I have so many issues with the current law of copyright generally - it's creating knowledge monopolies to a scary degree.

*nodsnodsnods* I'm a writer. I'm all for being able to make money from your work. But there's got to be a middle ground between that and strangling the discourse at birth.

I found out about the Bloomsday thing on the same day I found out Cory Doctorow had rereleased Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom under an expanded Creative Commons license that allowed for fanfic, so my first thought was to write an AU (and much shorter) version of Ulysses that took place in Doctorow's universe -- sort of a fuck-you to the Bloom estate and a thank-you-that's-nifty to Doctorow all in one. But I doubt I'll read either book in time.
