Why do Messianic Jews hand out menorahs on the street on the *last night* of Hanukkah? Thanks for the free candle holder, dude, but you're a week late. Also, I already have a menorah, though it's at my (non-Jewish) mother's house. But it was too cold to explain, so I'll just give it to [livejournal.com profile] captainnancy. For Christmas. :)

Speaking of cold, it was cold! It was really, really cold. Did I mention the cold? Walking from diner to Barnes and Noble with [livejournal.com profile] dotsomething was much like having my nose and ears attacked by cartilage-hating elves with chisels. But I did get some holiday shopping done, along with the inevitable "it's perfect for someone, but who? Oh yeah, me" shopping.

Actually, it still is cold. But today I was a little more prepared for it, with my sexy "disintegrating babushka" look. Anybody from a culture that habitually wears large pieces of cloth (great kilts, head scarves, saris, other) wanna tell me the knack for putting them in one place and getting them to stay there?

Happy Bill of Rights Day! Today, as we have since 1941, we commemorate the ratification of the first 10 amendments to the US constitution.

Mr. President, in the unlikely event that you are reading this, I commend to your attention amendments four, five, six, eight, and nine.

We have free chocolate in the office, [livejournal.com profile] mpoetess has written Wes and Connor for me, [livejournal.com profile] thebratqueen has written more Protocol, and I booked my Ireland trip and found a gift for my hardest to shop for relative, though I can't order it until I pay my maxed credit card. Why, oh why, do online vendors not take actual money from PayPal? Despite Way Too Much To Do, Not Enough Time to Do It In, and a Pronounced Desire to Nap, life could be worse.

So there's this kid, right? And he's gay. And the web site that helped him figure himself out goes pay, which compromises a lot of kids' anonymity. So he goes out and starts his own free, anonymous site for gay youth. Which is awesome, right? Proactive community building, exactly the kind of happy ending the Internet ought to provide? Yeah, until his school finds out and expels him.

I really identify with this kid, 'cause I remember being an isolated teenage sex freak with no one to ask, and I remember finding the BDSM community on Usenet and it being like the world suddenly changed. And I remember starting a group to reach other people too young for the adult groups, and having to call the ACLU because conservative Christians were trying to shut us down. But at least I was in college and not living with the parents I suddenly needed to come out to. At least even when our group was kicked out, I wasn't.

Anyway. The web site he started is here. I can't afford much, but I sent a Paypal donation.
