Oh yes, everyone in the Sorkin universe is a wronged, noble puppy, constantly kicked in the ribs. It was particularly evident in this episode.
I think "he works for a living" implies work that is very hard and little paid... in contrast to the Studio 30 cast members, who presumably are paid out of all proportion to the time put in. I read it as a statement of luxury and privilege vs. necessity.
