A question for the published writers, editors, and other publishing-knowledgeable folks:
When you submit the manuscript of a novel to publishers, is it a problem if you've previously published a portion (and/or version) of it as a short story? Do you need permission from the first press? Are publishers less willing to consider it? Does it count as prior publication?
