May. 20th, 2004 09:21 amThe one thing that really bugs me about the imbalance between fan and celebrity is that there's nothing I can do for them. Joss Whedon's shows have made such a huge difference in my life -- right up there with those few books that I not only loved but made something inside me wake up, or at least shift in its sleep. And now they're over, and there's nothing I can give him back. He doesn't want me to babysit, or write him stories or loan him books or suck his dick or listen to him bitch about his day, and those are the things I'm good for.
(I do realize he didn't do it alone -- and in the case of ATS there's people who arguably did a lot more. But he invented the world, and that's what I'm mourning, and that's what I want to honor.)
I thought about writing him a long thank you letter, as eloquent as I could make it. And then I thought of the poor man reading a million long thank you letters, and decided that wasn't a favor.
So instead, I just gave a donation in his honor to his alma mater, Wesleyan, since he talks about it and the film studies program so fondly in interviews. Just a small one, 'cause that's all I can afford, but the best way I could come up with to say thank you to Joss for 12 pretty damned good years, with something he might actually value. Anyway the kid who gets financial aid will value it, and Joss doesn't have to store it or throw it away.
If anyone wants to join me, the link is here.
