Real life is eating me. If I didn't answer your comment, it means I had nothing substantive to say. Silence = Mer nodding at the screen like an idiot. :)

There was more queer marriage news over the weekend than I could keep, you should pardon the expression, straight. The ones that were events and not just statements seemed to boil down to: California Supreme Court declined to stop the marriages for now, and Nyack, NY will honor marriages -- or marriage licenses, I was confused -- from anywhere. No links, though, sorry.

I finally saw Return of the King. Cut for spoilers and reactions )

Also read Cory Doctorow's Eastern Standard Tribe. Cut for spoilers for this plus Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom )

Is there anything to do in Washington DC at 4 in the morning?

Cut for travel details )

The good news is I should be back in time to vote in the primary, God willing and the creek don't rise.

Hi, guys! It's another "what do you want to see in my journal?" poll. This one on the gay marriage stuff.

There will continue to be me talking about this at intervals, because it's important to me. What I'm trying to figure out is if the straight-up links to news, without my comments, are actually keeping anybody informed who wants to be at this point, or if y'all are getting the news from the same places I am and don't need/want to see it again.

[livejournal.com profile] roseveare asks whether you need to find SF characters attractive in order to enjoy them.

It's an interesting discussion that you might want to go and put your 2 cents in, but I really only mention it for the following irrelevant tangent:

I said this in this comments:

I like smart, sarcastic, questioning outsider types who don't expect to buy my dinner or save my life, and it helps if they are playful, fuck guys and have cheekbones. Don't care for men in uniform. Have never dated a guy with more money than me, and would be a little wigged out by it. Like introspection, and am willing to put up with unreliability if you can wear a foofy poet shirt and mean it.

It occurs to me that I'm much more insightful about what I like when the context prevents me from muddling it up with what I think I ought to want.
